UPDATE: If you have a product or service that will benefit the government in the battle against the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill – you should approach the respective agency contracting personnel under the auspice of a Justification and Approval (J&A) for Other than Full and Open Competition under FAR 6.302-2 – Unusual and compelling urgency which has statutory authority under 41 U.S.C. 252 ( c ) (2) – Unusual and compelling urgency. BTW, this is the only way to obtain a sole-source during a natural disaster.

Sometimes, to find out what’s going on in a theatre of potential business opportunity, you have to literally go there. And, that is certainly the case as it pertains to the clean-up effort in the Gulf of Mexico. I recommended to my client base that we go directly to the epicenter of activity to see first hand what opportunities were available, and this strategy paid off in spades after three weeks of reconnaissance in the Gulf States.
After most natural disasters, the government (at all levels) generally goes through a period of complete disarray and chaos. In this type of environment, only the most astute business owners are able to determine where opportunity may reside. Right now, the Southeast corridor is no different.
The harsh reality is, contrary to what you may be hearing from the conventional lanes of business development communication; by the time information is communicated by the agencies – most, if not all, of the opportunities will be gone. No amount of event attendance is going to change that fact. Also, there is a misnomer about opportunities for firms not resident in Gulf being non-existent; nothing could be further from the truth.
In fact, this propaganda only serves to enhance the opportunity base of the perpetrators because they don’t have you to compete with.
In short, if you are in Engineering, Construction, Logistics, or related disciplines – get down to the Gulf and see first hand what’s going on. The relationships I have formed for my clients would not have been possible otherwise and will allow us to not only help our fellow citizens at a time of need, but monetize the clean-up effort over the next 5 years or so. Example, I have a client right now hauling oil clean-up from the beaches to a site in Mississippi – we won this contract by being in the middle of the theatre.
