Is Obama being compared to Reagan a Double Entendre?

Note: A double entendre is a figure of speech similar to the pun, in which a spoken phrase can be understood in either of two ways.

Barack Obama’s comparison to Ronald Reagan has created quite a bit controversy and the statements meaning of implied similarity is perceived in different ways; so, in the spirit of Hamlet, what follows are two perspectives distinctly on opposite sides of the understanding continuum…

I was nothing short of aghast upon reading Darrell M. West’s July 11th Letter To The Editor, “Obama could be likened to Reagan”. If that statement is not political blasphemy, I don’t know what is. Ronald Reagan has been collectively judged as one of the greatest presidents in American history, while the inexperienced Barrack Obama is the most liberal member of the Senate & would continue America down the slippery slope that it’s been on since the early ‘60s. The unfulfilled promise of grandiose accomplishments by the do-NOTHING ‘06-elected Democratic Congress should be omen enough of the peril awaiting this country, should a populist president take office in January.

The U.S. is snowballing toward the fate of the Roman Empire, but it’s absolutely no fault of the Republican Party.  The irony of this catastrophic situation is that it is occurring despite the GOP being in office, not because of it, they are only  trying to slow the inevitable demise. The whiny “Robin Hood Party” socialists have, over the past few decades (insidiously yet successfully) brought this country to it’s collective knees…coincidentally, Monica Lewinsky’s position when Bill Clinton introduced oral sex to The Oval Office. Clinton also chose to pull out of Somalia, launch cruise missiles against an aspirin factory in Sudan & admittedly, “tried & failed to get Bin Laden”.  As succinctly stated by the late Ronald Wilson Reagan, “Facts are stubborn things.”.

Before you cast your vote in November, heavily consider the potential of a presidential candidate who is mourning the lost opportunity (by the fortunate capture & hanging) of an “open dialogue” with his middle-namesake Saddam Hussein. Obama’s race or religion are of absolutely no issue; he is simply a flip-flopping unaccomplished “Sherwood Forest” liberal who will “rob from the rich; give to the poor” – just the same old left wing tax/spend garbage – packaged in tired “hope & change” platitudes. Reagan once said, “A baby is an alimentary canal with a loud voice at one end and no responsibility at the other.” Barrack Obama is simply the Democratic Party’s latest newborn.

In stark twenty-first-century-reality, the current downward spiral of the U.S. has nothing to do with political persuasion, it is the right-or-wrong choices that have been (continue to be) made: the second amendment vs. illegally-armed thugs, legal immigration vs. foreign invasion, nature’s eternal fluctuation vs. global warming paranoia, families vs. broken homes, freedom vs. terrorism, political correctness vs. real civil rights; (the bottom line in a faltering economy), work vs. sloth. Entitlement is the worst epidemic to ever hit this country; living far beyond one’s means is now not only accepted, but expected…; it is the chief platform of the far left. Under “The Spell of Obama”, if you work, you’ll be penalized, if you sit on your butt, you’ll be rewarded. Rest assured, “my friends”, ‘Barry’ Obama will do his best to keep your blinders on, ensuring that your priorities can continue to be putting the newest I-phone on your 20+%-interest credit card & scoring your next bag of weed. Putting aside the federal government’s necessary care of children & the truly-incapacitated: if EVERYONE ELSE is offered a free ride, how many Americans are willingly going to pay? You are witnessing the answer to that question daily, if you have the cast iron stomach needed to turn on your TV.

One of Reagan’s most famous quotations is, “Mr Gorbachev, tear down this wall”. 2008’s Republican nominee is also twisted to the left, but if Obama is elected President Of The United States, he will tear down this country, at breakneck speed.

I see the comments from Steven Daugherty of Anderson, IN, and his “nothing short of aghast” remark about the likening of Barack Obama to Ronald Reagan. I have no idea of Mr. Daugherty’s familiarity with Ronald Reagan. But, for what it’s worth, I’d like him to know that some of us who knew Ronald Reagan agree with the analysis that Obama has a lot of the characteristic’s of Ronald Reagan. But, we agree that Barack Obama’s just a bit smarter. Before I get accused of “tarnishing a legend” let’s make something very clear.  Ronald Reagan was a great leader of men.  He could “sense” things that some of us never could “figure out”. Ronald Reagan’s forte, though, was leading.  He got good folk around him, and “let the smart fellas figure it out”.

I can’t say Ronald Reagan was “a friend of mine”.  But I was appointed by him when he was the Governor of California, back in the 70s.  And, I was appointed by him, twice in the 80s, when he was President.  I respect him highly.  I enjoyed working for him greatly. In doing so, I learned a lot about him.  So, I think I have some qualifications in judging what he was like.

Barack Obama, I don’t know nearly as well.  But, based on what I’ve seen so far, I think the analogy of him and Ronald Reagan is fairly on point. I won’t let the fact that I’m a rather Conservative Republican blur my judgment of Barack Obama.  And, I won’t let the fact that though I disagree with him on a number of things, I’m willing to give him a chance to do what he says he will do.
The country needs a Change…
